Structural Deck Rebuilding in Louisville, KY & Southern Indiana
When the problem is underneath the decking — deteriorated framing, failed posts, compromised ledger connections, or inadequate structural components — Deck Pros Plus evaluates what is there and rebuilds what needs to be rebuilt.
Construction-First Approach
The Structure Underneath the Decking Is What Holds Everything Up
Many homeowners focus on the decking surface when a deck starts showing its age — the boards, the finish, the appearance. But the condition of the framing, posts, beams, joists, and ledger connections underneath the surface determines whether a deck is safe and whether it will perform long-term.
Deck Pros Plus takes a construction-first approach to every project. Before recommending any scope of work, we evaluate what is actually there. Abel Smith and Ernie Lunsford come from contractor families — their fathers were contractors, and they grew up around construction and the trades. That background is why we look at the structure first, not the surface.

Structural Evaluation
What We Evaluate Before Determining Scope
Structural deck rebuilding starts with an honest evaluation of the existing conditions. The components we typically assess include:
Joists
Joists span between beams and carry the load of the decking surface. Deteriorated, undersized, or improperly spaced joists are a common structural problem on older decks — particularly when composite decking is being considered, which has specific joist-spacing requirements.
Beams
Beams carry the load from the joists down to the posts. We evaluate beam condition, sizing, and connections to determine whether existing beams are suitable for continued use or require replacement.
Posts & Footings
Posts transfer the deck's load to the footings and into the ground. We evaluate post condition, sizing, and the condition of the footings beneath them. Deteriorated posts or inadequate footings are structural problems that cannot be addressed by replacing the decking surface.
Ledger Connection
Where a deck attaches to the house, the ledger connection is a critical structural and water-management point. We evaluate ledger condition, fastening, and flashing to determine whether the existing connection is suitable or requires reconstruction.
Framing Layout & Condition
Beyond individual components, we assess the overall framing layout — whether the framing is appropriate for the deck's size, load, and intended decking material — and the general condition of the framing as a system.
Moisture Damage & Deterioration
Moisture is the primary cause of structural deterioration in wood-framed decks. We look for evidence of rot, decay, and moisture-related damage in all structural components, including areas that may not be immediately visible from the deck surface.
Flashing & Joist Protection
Proper flashing at the ledger and joist tape or protective membrane on top of joists help prevent moisture from accelerating structural deterioration. We address these details as part of the structural scope.
Scope Determination
Our Approach: Evaluate First, Then Determine Scope
Deck Pros Plus does not apply a one-size-fits-all approach to structural deck work. Existing deck components may be retained when evaluation shows they are suitable for continued use. Deteriorated or inadequate structural components may be selectively rebuilt when appropriate. Where existing conditions no longer justify partial reconstruction, complete deck replacement may be the right recommendation.
We provide a clear written scope before any work begins. Homeowners understand exactly what is being rebuilt and why before a project starts.
When the overall condition of the deck warrants full replacement rather than structural rebuilding, we handle complete deck replacement as well.

We assess the existing structural conditions before determining any scope of work.
Determine Scope
We identify which components are suitable for continued use and which require rebuilding.
Written Scope
We provide a clear written scope before any work begins — no surprises.
Rebuild
We rebuild the structural components that need it, using proper materials and construction methods.
Structural Condition & Premium Decking
Structural Condition Matters Before Installing Premium Decking
One of the most common situations we encounter is a homeowner who wants to upgrade to Trex or composite decking — and discovers that the existing framing is not suitable for the new material. Composite decking has specific requirements for joist spacing and flatness. Installing premium decking over deteriorated or improperly spaced framing leads to problems that show up after the project is complete.
We evaluate the structural condition before any composite or Trex decking is installed. If the framing needs work, we address it as part of the project scope.
