Deck Replacement in Louisville, KY & Southern Indiana

Deck Replacement Services
Complete Deck Replacement & Structural Rebuilding
Deck Pros Plus approaches deck replacement as a complete construction project. That means evaluating the existing structure — footings, posts, beams, joists, ledger connections, stairs, and railings — before determining what can appropriately remain and what should be rebuilt. We don't simply replace surface boards and call it done.
When a deck has reached the end of its useful life, or when structural components are deteriorated, undersized, or unsafe, a complete replacement is the right answer. We handle the full scope: demolition and removal of the existing deck, structural rebuilding where required, new decking, stairs, and railings — all under one contractor.
Deck Evaluation
Signs Your Deck May Need Replacement
Not every deck problem requires full replacement, but certain conditions indicate that repair or resurfacing is not the right answer. If you're seeing any of the following, a structural evaluation is the right first step.
Soft, Spongy, or Rotted Decking Boards
Surface rot in decking boards is sometimes limited to the boards themselves, but it can also indicate moisture has reached the framing below. A structural evaluation determines whether the damage is surface-only or has compromised the structure.
Deteriorated Posts or Beams
Posts and beams that show significant rot, checking, or structural deterioration cannot be safely retained. When primary structural members are compromised, replacement of those components — and often the deck as a whole — is the appropriate response.
Ledger Board Problems
The ledger board connects the deck to the house. Improper installation, missing flashing, or deterioration at the ledger connection is a serious structural concern. Ledger failures are a leading cause of deck collapses and cannot be addressed with surface repairs.
Undersized or Non-Code Framing
Older decks were sometimes built with framing that does not meet current span and load requirements. When framing is undersized or improperly spaced, rebuilding the structure to current standards is the right approach.
Deck Is More Than 15–20 Years Old
Pressure-treated wood decks have a finite service life. A deck that is 15–20 years old or older may have structural components that are approaching or past their useful life, even if surface boards appear acceptable. A structural evaluation provides an honest assessment.
Visible Movement, Bounce, or Settlement
A deck that moves noticeably underfoot, bounces, or shows signs of settlement at posts or footings has structural problems that surface repairs cannot address. These conditions require a structural evaluation and, in most cases, rebuilding.
Making the Right Call
Replacement vs. Resurfacing: What's the Right Answer?
Some decks have structural framing that is sound and properly sized, with surface boards that have reached the end of their useful life. In those cases, resurfacing — removing the old decking and installing new boards on the existing frame — may be appropriate. We evaluate the existing structure honestly and tell homeowners what we find.
When structural components are deteriorated, undersized, or otherwise unsuitable, resurfacing is not the right answer. Installing new decking over a compromised structure creates a false sense of safety and does not address the underlying problem. In those cases, we recommend a complete replacement — including new framing where required — so the finished deck is structurally sound from the ground up.
We don't push homeowners toward more work than their situation requires. We evaluate the existing structure and give an honest recommendation based on what we find.
Our Process
Our Deck Replacement Process
Structural Evaluation
We evaluate the existing deck — footings, posts, beams, joists, ledger connections, stairs, and railings — before recommending any scope of work. We tell homeowners what we find and what we recommend.
Written Scope of Work
We provide a clear written scope covering exactly what is included — demolition, structural work, decking, stairs, railings, and any site-specific requirements. No surprises.
Demolition & Removal
We handle complete tear-out and removal of the existing deck structure. The site is cleared and prepared for new construction before any new work begins.
Structural Rebuilding
Where new framing is required, we install properly sized footings, posts, beams, and joists. We apply joist tape and flashing at critical connection points before any decking is installed.
Decking, Stairs & Railings
We install new decking — wood, Trex, or composite — along with stairs and railing systems as part of the project scope. Material choices are discussed during the estimate process.
Decking Choices
Decking Material Options for Replacement Projects
Deck replacement projects can incorporate a range of decking materials depending on the homeowner's goals, budget, and long-term maintenance preferences. We discuss the options as part of the estimate process.
Pressure-Treated Wood
Pressure-treated lumber is the traditional choice for deck construction in the Louisville area. It is cost-effective, widely available, and well-suited to the local climate when properly maintained. Wood decks require periodic staining or sealing to maintain their appearance and extend their service life.
Trex Composite Decking
Trex is one of the most widely recognized composite decking brands and a product we install on replacement projects. Trex composite decking is engineered to reduce maintenance demands — no annual staining or sealing required. See our dedicated Trex Deck Builder page for more detail on Trex-specific projects.
Trex Deck BuilderOther Composite Decking
Beyond Trex, a range of composite decking products are available at different price points and performance levels. We help homeowners compare options — including capped vs. uncapped composite, color and profile choices, and long-term maintenance considerations. See our Composite Deck Builder page for more on composite decking as a category.
Composite Deck BuilderExperience & Authority
15+ Years in Business — Backed by Contractor-Family Construction Knowledge
Deck Pros Plus has been building and replacing decks in Louisville, Kentucky and Southern Indiana for more than 15 years. The partners behind the company — Abel Smith and Ernie Lunsford — come from contractor families. Their fathers were contractors. They grew up around construction and the trades, and that background shapes how they approach every deck project.
Growing up around construction means understanding that a deck is a structure — not just a surface. That perspective informs how we evaluate existing decks, how we frame new ones, and why we don't install new decking over framing that isn't right. We focus on substantial deck replacement and structural rebuilding — not small repairs, individual board replacement, or handyman work.
